Hi there! I'm a financial planner for therapists!

2023 was the worst (was it just me?)

Hello Reader,

I hope your 2024 is off to a great start!

I’m personally glad that 2023 is in the rear view… it presented more than its fair share of challenges for me.

For me, most of those challenges were in the personal (rather than business) realm. But those personal challenges did mean I had to step back from work a bit.

And as I’m sure you can relate, having to step back from work when you run your own business is stressful!

Would my clients all leave? (They didn’t)

Would the whole business fall apart? (It didn’t.)

Would the financial performance (e.g. my income) suffer? (It did, but it wasn’t catastrophic.)

Would I ever return to my former level of productivity? (It took some time and a lot of hard work and patience, but I got there.)

During the trying last few months of the year, one of the most comforting conversations I had was with my own financial planner.

They assured me that I was going to be alright and that my current challenges weren’t sabotaging my long-term financial health. I guess on some level I knew that, but wow did it help to hear it from someone else.

We talked through different options and plans and together decided on a reasonable course of action. I felt a lot better coming out of that conversation… and actually I think it marked the turning point when I really started to feel better and get more fully on the path to recovery.

I’ve always known having my own financial planner would help in challenging times, but I really experienced it last year.

What’s on your mind?

I wasn’t able to put as much thought into my email newsletters last year as I like, but I’m excited to return to the practice this year.

👉 If you have any burning financial questions (or just something you’re curious about) hit reply and let me know. I’ll answer those questions over the course of the year in this newsletter.

Here’s to a happy and healthy 2024 🍾

Dave

But don't let my love of the tax code and spreadsheets scare you off! You're just as likely to find me with my nose buried in one of Pema Chodron's books as reading up on the latest financial planning techniques.

Hello Reader, Want the mindset that brings unlimited willpower? Keep reading and it could be yours! 👇 We’ve been taught that willpower is a limited resource. Many of us believe that willpower is like a battery – full at the start of the day, but depleted as the day wears on. And that this low battery leaves us vulnerable to poor impulse control and regrettable choices later in the day. And there is research seemingly backing up this limited view of willpower. The phenomenon came to be known...

Hello Reader, It wasn’t just a good day, it was a GREAT day. I was clear-headed, sharp, uber-productive. I was flying through my to-do list, and doing (IMHO) my best work, when I made a quick pivot to dispatch some emails. One email was from HR, announcing a change to the vacation policy. What? That’s interesting. Without hesitation, I click on the attached PDF to see if it was good news or bad. And just like that… I had been phished. I knew that clicking on a suspicious attachment could...
